Casting Call

"Funeral Friends" (working title)
A Taylor University Student Production

Stuck at a funeral for a guy he barely knew, Alex, a pastor's kid, is a bit unsure of how to react when he comes across another teenager smoking in a church closet. Alex finds himself hopelessly out of his comfort zone when he is trapped in a closet with the smoker and two other people he has nothing in common with... except their ties to the recently deceased.

Deadline to submit is NOW
April 26th:
However, we are actively casting, and may finalize casting prior to that. If you submit at the last minute, we cannot guarantee all roles will still be available. (if a role is cast that will be noted here)

We are looking to cast FIVE actors for our final senior production (character descriptions below). Exact schedule is TBD, but will take place over about two days on the weekend of May 1st. Location is TBD, but will likely be in the Upland or Marion, IN. Note: All roles are unpaid.

(In addition, we have one scene that will require a large number of extras/non-speaking roles. )

This film will be screened at Taylor University's Narrative Film Premiere on May 14th and will be submitted to film festivals both locally and nationwide.

If you are interested in joining our cast, please fill out the audition form on the right and attach the video with your audition (detailed instructions on filming it below). Feel free to submit more than one video if you are interested in auditioning for multiple roles.

Thank you for auditioning!!
  - Faith Marsh, Luisa Dugan, Kim Ferrell, Jake Nichols, Ryan Krall

Filming Instructions

1. Film yourself on a simple background in a room with good lighting. Position the camera so that we see you from your chest up. iPhones work great for this— the important this is just that we can see your face clearly-- we want to see your awesome expressions and acting!!

2. Start the videos with a "slate" - clearly state your name and what role you are auditioning for.

3. Read the scenes! Don't try to follow all the directions in the script or try to move around a much. Keep it simple and just read the lines. Have a friend stand behind the camera and read all the other lines. Also, keep everything in one video-- it helps us make sure we don't lose track of anything!

4. You don't have to be memorized, but make sure you look at the camera as much as possible. REMEMBER how you react when the other characters are talking is JUST as important as how you say your own lines, if not even more so.

6. Upload your finished video to YouTube and make it UNLISTED — NOT Private. Then give the link to the video in the audition form. You can also upload the file if that’s easier.

6. RELAX and have fun! Don't try and refilm your audition 70 times-- typically your second or third try is going to be your best one anyways. Don’t stress about it too much— just have fun and be yourself.

Character Descriptions

PASTOR DAD (Male, 30s - 50s)
Alex’s dad and pastor of the church. Constantly juggling to balance his time and attention between his family and his job.

ALEX (Male, 14 - 17)
Pastor’s kid and is generally seen as a “good kid.” He is very aware of other people, but sometimes struggles to figure out how to engage socially.  He wants to be seen as understanding and  kind —not the stuck-up, snobby PK, but then struggles to know how he should interact with his peers when they’re doing things he really thinks are wrong.

JAXON (Male, 14 - 17)
Jock. Was on a basketball team with the deceased, but didn’t know him super well. Jaxon wants to be cool and grown-up and wants to figure out the world for himself, but he sometimes does this through somewhat reckless behavior.

SARAH (Female, 14 - 17)
The popular girl. Sarah wants to be friends with everyone and everyone to be friends. She and the deceased are old family friends, but they hadn’t been particularly close in a long time. She knows that Natalie is his sister, but she isn’t really friends with her and doesn’t want to be the one to tell anyone.

NATALIE (Female, 14 - 17)
A mysterious figure who turns out to be the deceased’s sister. The others stumble across her hiding in the basement smoking “cigarettes.” Her brother was the “golden child” of the family, while she struggles to get along with her parents. She tends to try and cut herself off from people by putting on a tough/apathetic facade.
